Home Network: Wired versus wireless home networks

Wired versus wireless home networks

Whilst wired and wireless networks differ in their implementation, their basics are the same. Both use similar networking topologies and both transmit and receive data based mainly based on common protocols such as TCP/IP.

The obvious difference between wireless and wired networks is wires. With wireless networks, the absence of cables reduces cable clutter and mess and makes installation much easier, especially in difficult to reach areas. This does however mean that wireless signals can be impaired, and their strength decreases the further away a a user is from an access point. Thus the reliability of a wireless network is far less than that of a traditional wired network. Wireless networks are not as suitable for large data transfers. The signals being propagated in the airways means that wireless networks are more prone to intruders and eavesdroppers. Albeit the convenience of wireless networks allows people to connect easily to the Internet via wifi hotspots, such as those found at airports, or for laptop users to simply move their workstation around if desired.
