Home Network: Set up wireless home network

Set up wireless home network

The setup of a home wireless network is different for every home. This depends on a number of different factors such as the number of users, common resources, importance of speed and the physical installation of the network.

The number of users is the same as the number of computers that are going to be connected to the network. Each computer will need a wireless access device. For the majority of homes one wireless router will suffice.

Common resources include Internet connection sharing and printers. Ideally the router should include an integrated broadband modem and be located close to the DSL/Cable line. A printer can be connected directly to the router if the router has a USB port.

The importance of speed depends on what is required of the network. For casual users the typical network speeds will be enough for checking email, web browsing and sending and receiving small files. For more demanding users such as gamers a higher speed and low lag times combined with a reliable connection is essential.

The physical installation of the network depends on the shape of the house and where each user is located. This is probably the most obscure part of the setup as the aim will be to house the router in a central location, as close to as many users as possible with minimal interference caused to signals by obstructions. Signals can easily penetrate walls but will be absorbed by metal surfaces or distorted by other signals.
