Home Network: Long range wireless networking

Long range wireless networking

Most wireless networking devices have a limited range of tens of feet, however with the improvement in technology this is changing. Long range wireless networking is not far off from becoming achievable. It is important to remember that long range wireless networking has been available for many years. For example satellite transmissions are wireless but use techniques such as sky wave propagation to disperse signals.

With long range wireless networking in place, many homes can access the Internet from a common access point in the same way that this technique is used by mobile phones. These long range access points will in turn communicate with one another, or larger access points or even satellites. Using ground wave propagation radio signals can travel up to 30 kilometres in distance. Computer users will be able to connect to the Internet and communicate from any point on the planet, even the most far off and remote areas, as long as there is an access point within reach. This is already being achieved by using satellite phones and GSM transmissions.
