Home Network: How to set up wireless networking

How to set up wireless networking

Once all of the hardware components have been installed it is time to setup wireless networking by configuring the software. The first point of call is to setup the router. This is done by accessing the router software via a web browser. The default address is http://192.168.0.1. The first thing is do is to configure and test an existing Internet connection. Once this is done it is time to add basic security to the network. This includes MAC address filtering, changing the default admin password and creating a long SSID string.

The next step is to enable DHCP on the router, so it automatically assigns IP addresses to each users computer. Afterwards add users by adding their MAC address to the router settings. To find a users MAC address, type in ipconfig in the Windows command prompt. Make sure to save the router settings. Each users computer will then have to be configured to connect to the network via the correct SSID, connection speed and login details. In Windows all of these settings can be accessed via right clicking on the Wireless Network Connection icon in the Network Connections window. It is important to note that some changes may require that the user reboot their machine or that router may need to be rebooted.
